Intro
Domo goals is a feature that allows users to create results-driven objectives. These goals can be personal, for teams, or for companies. This article describes how to create a new goal and add basic customizations.
Creating a Goal
You can create a goal by navigating to Goals, adding basic information such as a title and description, a due date, and one or more metrics.
Follow the steps below to get started:
1. Select Goals in the top navigation. For smaller screen sizes, you may need to expand the More menu.
2. Select the New Goal button.
3. Enter a title in the Goal name field and add an optional description in the Description field.
4. Select a Start Date and Achieve By date. Modify these dates by selecting the pencil icon to the right.
5. Finally, click Next
You have created a basic goal! You can add one or more results, or metrics, that you want to track. If the title and description is sufficient for now, click the Skip button.
Adding a Metric
After clicking Next, you can add your first metric. Metrics allow you to track a goal’s progress. Tracking your progress automatically or manually moves you toward your goal.
To add metrics to your goal, first, determine whether you’re tracking progress by:
- Linking a Domo card
- Manually updating metrics
- Or, by connecting a project or task.
Then, select your desired metric.
Linking a Card
This option allows you to create a metric using data in a Domo card. The metric’s progress is automatically driven by value changes in the card. Anyone with a default security role of “Participant” or higher can link Domo cards to goals in their instance.
Follow the steps below to link a card:
1. First, select Link a Card from the metrics options.
2. Choose a card or search for one.
3. Make a selection from the various drop-down menus under Metric, Meets this condition, For This Value, and the Start Value .
Card metrics are made up of the following parts:
- Metric, or, the item being measured. This could be the current Summary Number of the Card or the sum, average, minimum, or maximum value of all items or items in a certain column.
- Filters may be applied to evaluate specific conditions that are specific to the key result being measured. These filters do not affect the underlying card being linked.
- Meets this condition: A conditional statement that connects the measure to the value or percentage. Domo provides a variety of condition statements to choose from, including greater than, less than, and equal statements and combinations of these. Frequently, goals are considered achieved if they meet OR exceed a target. Selecting greater than or equal to, for example, will assure your goal is complete even if you go above your target.
4. Click Next, and in the Metric name field, enter a title.
5. (Optional) In the Description field, enter a description for the metric.
6. (Optional) Change the owner if it isn’t you.
7. (Optional) Change the Start Date and Achieve By date
8. Click Done. The metric is now created and attached to your goal!
Manually Updated Metrics
This option allows users to input their data at any time. To create a manually tracked metric, select Manual. From there, you have two options:
- Use a percentage scale, where you report progress as the completion percentage the particular activity has reached
- Choose your own value, where there is a specific value you’re working toward such as how many times you want to do something.
Percentage-Based Metrics
1. Select Use a percentage scale.
2. In the Metric name field, enter a title.
3. (Optional) In the Description field, enter a description for the metric and select Next.
4. Check the Start Date and Achieve By fields. To make changes to these dates, select the pencil icon.
5. Select Done. The metric is now created and attached to the goal, with the progress initially set to 0%.
"Choose Your Own Value" Metrics
1. Select Choose your own value and click Next.
2. In the Metric name field, enter a title.
3. (Optional) In the Description field, enter a description for the metric and select Next.
4. Define what you are measuring. Enter Start Value/Current Value, Target Value, and select the condition.
5. Determine the Start Date and Achieve By dates. To make changes to these dates, select the pencil icon.
6. Select Done, the metric is now created and attached to the goal, with the progress initially set to 0%.
From the Goals detail view, you can add an additional metric at any time by selecting the ADD A METRIC button.
Connecting a Project or Task
This option allows users to track metric progress with projects and tasks. These projects and tasks can be existing, or, users can begin new ones when creating the metric.
Follow the steps below to connect a project or task:
1. After giving your New goal a title and optional description, select Next.
2. Select Projects and Tasks and click Next.
3. You can then locate an existing project or create a new one by selecting New and giving it a Project name and optional description. The metric’s name will now be your project title.
4. (Optional) change the owner if it isn’t you.
Viewing Your Goal
Once you’ve completed the creation process, your goal appears in the Domo interface under Goals. When you open the feature, you will see your goals listed in your Personal view, but they can also be seen by others in your team or organization, depending on how you connect your goal with others. (See Enhancing your Goals)
In the Personal view, each goal you create will appear in summary view, showing the title/description, progress summary information, owner, and due date. Metrics are indicated with a small colored dot reflecting their quantity and achievement levels. To get a quick view, hover over a corresponding dot. You’ll see the name and due date for that metric.
By clicking anywhere on the box housing the goal, you'll see a detailed view that includes the goal's metrics.
By clicking on any metric, you’ll see its detailed view. You can edit details such as the name, owner, and due date in this view. You can also update progress for manually managed metrics. (See Updating and Managing Your Goals)
